I was going with extremes to make it stand out, but matte gray can be just as useful. I find it a bit drab for everyday work, I personally have a nice vibrant red up at the moment! White and black are extremes, and you can accomplish both from middle gray. Also, paint is cheap, especially if you don't need much (and you don't) to paint.
