Sexy High Heels Make A Photograph

The studio has been doing a lot more fashion, and glamor shoots recently and we've found ourselves consistently lacking one thing to make or break a photograph or entire shoot we are working on. Some days we can work around it, but other days we get completely stuck by the lack of a good shoe for our models.

Normally this isn't an epic fail type of issue, but when you start shooting glamor and high fashion photographs you need to be keenly aware of all the small details - and heels are not a small detail in the fashion world! As a small studio we cannot afford to have huge wardrobes stored around for our beck and call. We usually point our customers in a few specific directions when it comes to apparel.

Heels are very specific to the shot and location we are looking to capture on film. They can and will make a model look completely out of sorts if they do not fit, or are too over the top for that model to wear with a sense of sexiness. In the end the model needs to ooze confidence and that literally starts from the ground up. Get a good heel, and you'll get good results from your subjects.

5 Ideas to bring in more money to your photography studio

Models who are just starting out tend to not have any clue what to do during a photo shoot. Now unless you're a photographer that has an absolute idea of what the shoot is going to look like then you're relying on the model to bring some life to the shoot too. If your model is new to the scene how are they supposed to bring that life to the shoot? One answer is with clothing and accessories.

A great way to start a shoot with a new model or even a client you've shot in the past is to ask them to go shopping for two outfits before the shoot and bring those outfits with them. What model doesn't like to shop? Tell them to go to ebay and look up some vintage clothing stores or retro outfits and combine it with some contemporary accessories or shoes etc. Combining shopping with clothing is always a good way to prep a model for a new shoot and make them feel comfortable in what they will be shooting since they picked it out themselves!

As a photographer, I'm always on the look out for shops that are inexpensive and can provide me with quick service for my next shoot. I've listed three of the shops that I use consistently to get great vintage clothing for photo sessions at the bottom of this post. Here are some ideas for a quick and easy shoot setup:

5 Ideas to bring in more money to your photography studio:

1) Find a nice urban spot with contemporary lines and visuals. Put your model in some interesting corners or entryways - this will produce a great contrast of solid machined lines versus soft and sexy lines of your model.

2) If your model buys some outfits from an ebay store, send a photo or two from your shoot to that store and offer to let them use those photos as promotional shots for their store. They can get you a link to your website which is always beneficial and could turn into more business for your studio.

3) Work with the 40 to 50 somethings in your local area to relive their youth in portrait sessions. A lot of them have really nice vintage outfits that they would love to put on one more time and get some great photos of.

4) Depending on your studio size and setup, vintage clothing is a great low cost way to expand your studio's wardrobe offerings. Having a small collection of clothing and accessories can add fun and unique look to any of your shoots.

5) If you've got a good senior photo business at your studio, offer a return package at a discount price for the seniors when they are in college. Most college students are poor, but could get you some great promo photos for your studio at a very low cost!

5 Vintage Photo Ideas

If you're looking to try something unique as a model or photographer, look no further then a vintage look. Photographers love the vintage look because it can be combined with modern fashion to create something really interesting visually, as well as provoking a nostalgic feel. As a model, it provides greater creative scope to be able to choose from a larger variety of clothing.

Photographers can cross process finished files to get a fantastic look. This tutorial on cross processing is a great place to start if you've never tried it before. I won't go into too much detail here as the tutorial can explain the cross processing technique better, but suffice it to say that tweaking certain color channels will produce a vivid interesting look that works great with vintage clothing.

Five Ideas For Photographers & Vintage Clothing:

1) Take your model in a vintage outfit and put them in a very modern and urban environment. The stark contrasts between a more nature friendly culture of vintage apparel versus the ultra modern starkness would be a great contrast for a shoot.

2) Use your model connections to take product shots for clothing stores offering sales on the internet. Most stores do not have the resources to complete this type of project, and do it well. Offer a store your services for trade in apparel or a steep discount. Its a great way to promote your work, as well as gain some apparel for your studio wardrobe.

3) Create a small niche business in your home town that shoots vintage portraits for the baby boomer generation. Theres a ton of them out there, carve out your own section of wealth from it.

4) Shop vintage stores for great deals in order to have a decent wardrobe on site for models to pick from. We've all had the models that show up with no outfits!

5) Mix new age fashion with vintage apparel to create a unique multi era look, framed by a dull and metallic backdrop to make the look pop off.

Shoes can be the most important choice you can make for a fashion photograph. Of course you need a model that fits the shot, but the fashion and accessories that go on that model will either make or break the shot. Certainly it depends on the type of photograph you are taking, but if you are working in the glamor or fashion niches, as a photographer you should be keenly aware of the outfit and accessories your subject is wearing. One of the most important style choices for a full figure photograph are the shoes.

Most subjects are very picky when it comes to picking their outfits for a shoot. Whether it be a semi pro photographer or a high end fashion shoot in Milan, the shoes are a crucial part of the shot. For home photographers and semi pros alike its very hard to have a full wardrobe selection for clients to choose from as it gets super expensive very quickly. Luckily there are places that offer really good deals that anyone can afford.

As a photographer I try to have clients bring with them the outfits and accessories that they want to shoot in, but sometimes its nice to have some other options available to offer clients.
