A Peek Into the First-Look

The most anticipated and emotional moment of your wedding day is that single instant where you lock eyes with the love of your life. Dressed to impress, the world seems to stop, stresses forgotten, and memories of your whole relationship come rushing forward. Your future starts now.

As a bride or groom to be, how do you envision that moment? Two styles of reveal are prevalent in the modern wedding day: traditional and first-look. While there are pros and cons to both methods, choosing the right one can help create an itinerary that works well for you; both emotionally and from a time management stand-point.

Traditional

As its name suggests, the traditional reveal is one that our parents and grandparents have all celebrated. A long aisle, a slow walk balanced with a perfect soundtrack, and a loved one at the end of it. It is a special moment shared by not only the couple to be married, but all loved ones invited.

First-Look

A newer trend is the first-look; a set-aside, private moment, planned by your photographer before the ceremony, which includes only the couple. This no-expectation reveal is intimate, quiet, and includes pure excitement.

So why break away from tradition and embark on a first look? This method is one that essentially builds in emotion AND time into the wedding day. Having a private moment can alleviate nerves, tension and expectation from relatives. It creates an environment unique to the couple where they can freely laugh, cry, hug, high five, and simple bask in the event that they are choosing to partake in TOGETHER. After their initial reveal to each other, we take the time to create imaginative and artistic portraits while also inviting the bridal party and family members to join in for their close-ups. This inherently translates to having MORE time together as a couple before the ceremony even starts.

What’s Best?
  • While we would never impose our own will on our clients, when asked, we do suggest a first-look and here’s why:
  • Doing so builds flexibility into a tightly scheduled itinerary that still allows the couple to enjoy the tiny details they planned into their day.
  • Hair and makeup will always look best earlier in the day.
  • With the majority of portraits being done earlier in the day, the couple is offered the opportunity to mingle with guests at cocktail hour, when portraits are traditionally done.
  • More time is allotted for us, your photographers, to do what we do best; create a portrait that you will be proud to display in your home.

Formals-133-min

There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to your grand reveal at your wedding, and it is a highly personal one. Whether it be as you walk down the aisle for the first time, or quietly with your partner, it is a moment that will never be forgotten.

Happy Wedding Planning!

Kristin & Scott

We met Nicole and Jeremy on a chilly day by the waterfront in Portland for their engagement photography session. Shooting in Maine in the spring time can be a challenge to say the least. You never know what the weather will be like, and even if it is sunny out – the temperature might be below freezing. Nicole and Jeremy were great, and didn’t let the chilly air temps get to them. We had a lot of fun running around the Old Port shooting their engagement photos. Only a few on lookers were found as we shot early in the day. Working downtown can provide a lot of different options for backdrops, but you have to be patient and work with the crowds to get the shots you really want. We’re looking forward to shooting their wedding photography this coming June.

Engagement photography sessions in the Maine spring weather can provide a lot of different looks!

Handsome little guy, and a soon to be Bruins fan. Mom and Dad should be very proud! Conner’s newborn photos were done on a nice sunny Sunday afternoon at his home where he could lounge and get ready for the Bruins playoff game that afternoon. Conner did a great job posing for us, and even decided to take a nap right in the middle of the session – which works out great for us to get those awesome sleepy time photos.

After sliding a beautiful ring on her finger, Ian & Maya contacted Hexfire Photography to shoot their engagement photos.  Before the shoot, we sat down with this couple to pick their brains on style, photographic likes and dislikes and what the future holds for them.  A few short weeks later we found ourselves in the ocean side alleys of Portland’s Old Port photographing with them. And what a fun day it was!

Engagement photo session in the Old Port!

On a crisp and bright day, we met up with the couple as well as their handsome dog Miles.  Excited to start, Maya explained that both Ian and Miles may be a little camera shy at first.  This couldn’t be any farther from the truth!  Ian was extremely laid back and ready for anything we could throw at him.  Miles was very intrigued with the camera lens, and every chance he got seemed to saunter over and ask – “Hey guys, whatcha doin’? Take my picture, not my Mom and Dad’s!”.

Engagement Photo ianmaya3 ianmaya6 ianmaya2 ianmaya4

With each passing photo, both Maya and Ian warmed up and created a series of photos to exhibit a love for each other and for Miles. They are not a couple who are overly excited with public displays of affection, but none was needed.  The love shown in their eyes, laughter that comes from inside jokes, and subtle hugs and hand grazes can illustrate to anyone that meets this couple, that they are truly meant to be.

We are looking forward to shooting the wedding photos of Maya & Ian in July, at Bowdoin College this spring.

This engagement photo session was a lot of fun from beginning to end. We have all seen the commercials and you can even sing along to the song (…. this will be….. and everlasting love….dooo do do…).  With the popularity of online dating growing, it is hard to ignore the success rate of eharmony.com.  Christopher and Alyssa are no exception and really should consider creating their own commercial!

Engagement photos in Portsmouth are always a fun!

Chris and Alyssa contacted Hexfire Photography to shoot their engagement photos in Portsmouth NH; a picturesque and eclectic city on the water.  Their warm and fun loving personalities quickly became evident through the lens of a camera. It’s always a pleasure when couples do not take themselves too seriously and can have a good time.  Laughter and smiles were prominent all day, even from their puppy Tyke, who joined in for a few photos. Portsmouth is a great vibrant city that we are always willing to shoot in – even in the winter time! Alyssa and Chris frequent the city often and it provided a great spot to shoot their engagement photos.

The couple was married in San Fransisco, CA and returned to Maine to have a celebration with family and friends. Maybe Dr. Neil Clark Warren, founder of eharmony, should have been invited to the party. The after wedding trip party was also a lot of fun.

Engagement Photos at Portland Ocean Gateway

The party was held at the Portland Ocean Gateway function room which overlooks the harbor and is an exceptionally beautiful spot to have a party. The huge floor to ceiling windows and walkways on the outside allow for guests to soak in the harbor feel, and have a great party. The couple had an exceptionally great local band called The Time Pilots rock the evening, and everyone was up and moving all night.

The colors of foliage and great weather are the best backdrop you could ask for.

Just like the Bride and Groom, we wake up the morning of wedding shoots with a rush of emotions. Always excited to get the day going and capture memorable wedding photos, the morning of Marc and Rebecca's day was no different. A storm had just cleared, and from behind the clouds, blue bird skies and warm sunshine greeted everyone. It was going to be a great day.

Autumn, a beautiful time for a Maine fall wedding

There is nothing quite like a Maine fall wedding. The colors of foliage and great weather are the best backdrop you could ask for.

Just like the Bride and Groom, we wake up the morning of wedding shoots with a rush of emotions.  Always excited to get the day going and capture memorable wedding photos, the morning of Marc and Rebecca’s day was no different. A storm had just cleared, and from behind the clouds, blue bird skies and warm sunshine greeted everyone. It was going to be a great day.

Marc and Rebecca are a warm couple who absolutely adore each other. On the morning of their maine fall wedding day, nervous laughter and giddy energy could be seen from both of them. Finally dressed to impress, both made their way to the ceremony, and upon locking eyes with each other finally settled in to a calm and content state.  Side by side, this is where they belonged.

After a touching ceremony, we accompanied the wedding party and family to a picturesque location where the morning sun had faded to to a warm glow, highlighting the best colors that an fall Maine Wedding has to offer. Rebecca and Marc were a lot of fun to work with because they love an artistic style of photography that allowed us to experiment some and try things like going up to the roof top of the Double Tree Hotel at night and photographing them still in their formals!

Camp O-AT-KA is an amazing place for wedding photography!

Traveling all the way from Oregon, Amanda and Eric brought many things with them to their wedding. Most importantly, they brought their desire to have a damn good time! They also brought customized sun glasses for all the guests – and their wedding photography! Once they were settled into Camp O-At-Ka, which is on the beautiful Sebago Lake, this couple planned a relaxing weekend that revolved around their vows, their friends, and their family.

As we drove up to the wedding site, it became evident that this was going to be a fun filled day for wedding photography and those involved. Volleyball and soccer games were being played by the whole wedding party, as the soon to be bride and groom shared a laugh while laying in the sun. As Amanda came over to greet us, she looked at the time and said “I guess I should start to get ready now, huh”. This low-key attitude put us at ease and gave us the freedom to walk around the camp to brainstorm for the amazing photographs that would follow.

Amanda and Eric have created a life for themselves full of adventure, love and fun. Their entire wedding day was a reflection of that. The ceremony brought tears to many eyes (including those of us behind the camera lens). The toasts had guests in stitches and the reception turned out to be one of the biggest dance parties we have ever seen! It was heartwarming to be a part of their wedding day and capture those memories for them. We wish nothing but continued happiness for both Amanda and Eric.

Wedding Photography on Christmas – wait its July!?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. But in July? You betcha.

Matt and Maria are a couple who enjoy all the details of Christmas, from snowflakes and candy canes, to the love felt between friends and family.  And on a hot day in July, Christmas came alive at Maria’s family estate as a wedding and north pole were being constructed. We were very happy to do the wedding photography for a Christmas in July wedding.

Maria and Matt thought of every detail and finally could enjoy their day together. Santa made an appearance and visited with guests while the bridesmaids looked beautiful in their bright red gowns.  Taking a moment to themselves, the couple embraced and shared some private loving words – which we’re pretty sure that Santa heard!  All that was missing was the crisp air, snow flying about and some reindeer.

When we learned of this Christmas themed outdoor style wedding, excitement was in the air.  Anything different that steps from the norm gives us creative freedom to create great photos. We’re always up for unique and non traditional style weddings.

We wish Matt & Maria many more Christmases together.

Rainy days can make great wedding photography!

A dog is a man’s best friend. When that furry buddy helps to introduce you to your future husband or wife, they expect extra treats.  Russell and Marcie met one fateful day while at a local dog park and the rest was history. As their dogs Meeko and Boomer became fast friends, a budding romance was developing. Russ and Marcie planned an amazing celebration full of family and laughter for their big day.

Even the unseasonably cold temperatures of that April day couldn’t stop the warm smiles that seemed to show across everyone’s face. The locations we had for wedding photography that day were spectacular. The Roger Williams Park for formals, and The Rhodes on the Pawtuxet provided gorgeous backdrops for the first look photographs the couple chose to do before the ceremony.

Once the ceremony was completed the festivities were in full force. From the toast with Russ’s siblings, welcoming Marcie into the family to the dance party at the reception, a good time was had by all.  Even though Meeko and Boomer were not at the celebration, their presence could be felt.  A silhouette monogram was created in their likeness which adorned everything from the decorations, to the cake.

All in all Russ and Marcie’s day was one for the record books, we are so happy to have done their wedding photography and captured so many memories for them.
